The Power of a Model

Before jumping into our coaching session, I want to share a critical thought: you must have a model for viewing and growing your business. Your business will only expand to the level at which you can operate. If you’re a founder running everything by yourself, there will be limits. You need to unlock specific components of your business—whether it’s automation, leveraging a team, or focusing on high-value activities—to truly scale beyond your current limitations.

Meet Paul Mort: Mindset Coach and Business Owner

Paul Mort coaches male business owners, many of whom are stuck at a certain income level. Their biggest barrier? It’s not just their business strategy—it’s their mindset, energy, and mood. In Paul’s case, his business has plateaued at the seven-figure mark for the past few years. His sales team experiences fluctuations: one week, they book 30 to 40 calls; the next, only a few. Naturally, he’s asking, “Do I need more leads? Why are some weeks better than others?”

This is a question many business owners face, and it’s where most go wrong. Let’s break down why “more leads” may not be the answer and what you should focus on instead.

Step 1: Perfect Your Product

The biggest misconception? Most people think they need more leads to grow their coaching business. But in reality, the first place to look is your product. Ask yourself: What’s the churn rate?

Churn reflects the value your clients experience over time. If you have high churn, your clients aren’t sticking around because they aren’t seeing the long-term value. Instead of scrambling for more leads, focus on your current clients. How can you increase the value they get from your program month over month? Continually stretching their future with new milestones is essential for building loyalty and trust.

If you want to grow, make your clients more valuable. Aim for a churn rate under 4% monthly. Collect feedback to understand how likely your clients are to stick around and benefit from your program in the future. Once your product is solid and clients are seeing value, then you’re ready to move forward.

Step 2: Strengthen Your Sales Team

Now that your product is solid, it’s time to look at your sales team. Do they have the belief, skill set, and processes needed to convert leads? You might be generating leads, but if your sales team isn’t trained or doesn’t believe in the product, conversions will be weak.

Here’s what to focus on:

  • Belief in the product: Your sales team needs to fully understand and believe in what you offer.

  • Sales skills: They should be skilled at closing deals and overcoming objections.

  • Processes: What happens the moment a potential client books a call? Do they receive materials that pre-frame the conversation, addressing common objections like time, money, and difficulty?

Invest in mentoring and training your sales team. Regularly review sales calls to ensure they are maximizing every opportunity. If your team is performing well, a slight improvement (e.g., from a 50% close rate to 60% or 70%) can drastically impact your revenue.

Step 3: Audit Your Messaging and Leads

Once your product and sales team are solid, look at your messaging and the leads coming in.

  • Is your heart still in it?: If you’ve lost interest in your audience, they’ll sense it. You need to be passionate and aligned with the problems your market faces.

  • Is your message accurate?: As markets evolve, their needs change. Make sure your messaging reflects the current problems your audience is experiencing. Don’t just aim to be the best—aim to be your audience’s favorite.

  • Are you reaching the right people?: You might need to invest in paid advertising or collaborations to expand your reach. Partner with others who have access to your target market and pay to get in front of their audience.

Lead nurturing is just as important as lead generation. Make sure you’re building relationships with potential clients through your content, email lists, and social media. Paid ads can also boost visibility, helping you build audiences and retarget them with relevant offers.

Step 4: Empower Your Team

As a business owner, the growth of your business is directly linked to the quality of decisions made outside of you. If you’re constantly involved in making every decision, you’re creating a bottleneck.

Hire people with two things in mind: responsibility and activity. Those responsible should make decisions autonomously, while those focused on activity should execute specific tasks. The more autonomy your team has, the more bandwidth you’ll free up to focus on growth.

Conclusion: Think Bigger, Think Smarter

Growing your coaching business isn’t just about chasing more leads. It’s about refining your product, empowering your sales team, ensuring your messaging resonates with your audience, and building a team that can function without constant oversight. These strategies, when applied consistently, can help you break through revenue plateaus and unlock new levels of growth.

Remember, business growth is an ongoing process of solving one problem and creating the next. Each new level of success will present fresh challenges, but with the right systems in place, you’ll be ready to tackle them.
